Komodo is an island of Indonesia with a surface area of 390 km² and 500 KM East of Bali and is isolated from other islands. This has allowed endemic animal species to develop. To protect the large monitor lizards much of this island has been maintained as a National Park. The inhabitants of the island are descendents of former convicts who were exiled to the island, who have mixed themselves with the Bugis from Sulawesi.
In addition, the island is a popular destination for diving. Administratively, it is part of the East Nusa Tenggara province. It belongs to the Lesser Sunda Islands and is a part of the Komodo National Park. Particularly notable here is the native Komodo dragon.
